Bio: I volunteer one day a week as a ships visitor for the Fort Vancouver Seafarers Center located at the Port of Vancouver, Vancouver, Washington. I am one of the four ships visitors that meet each of the roughly 600 ocean going merchant ships that come into our port each year. We escort the crew around the Portland-Vancouver area and provide phone cards and a bank of phones so that they can contact there families. About fifty per cent of all seafarers today come from the Philippines. India and China also provide large numbers of seafarers. The average seafarer from these countries only makes about 0.00 - 0.00 per month and does not see his or her family for 10 months at a time.
